Israel, Greece, and Cyprus Forge Military Alliance Amidst Regional Tensions

Nicosia, Cyprus – A trilateral military cooperation plan between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus for 2026 has been finalized, signaling a deepening of security ties between the three nations. The agreement, signed last week in Nicosia, was officially announced on Sunday, marking a significant step in regional defense strategy.

Brigadier General Amit Adler, Head of Foreign Cooperation in the Israeli army, led the Israeli delegation and engaged with his Greek and Cypriot counterparts to discuss the implementation of the plan. The initiative encompasses joint exercises, the formation of specialized working groups across various military and security domains, and a strategic military dialogue on issues of mutual concern. This aims to enhance operational coordination and facilitate the exchange of expertise among the respective armed forces.

The cooperation plan is viewed as a crucial development in bolstering stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean. According to sources, this alliance is also designed to deter what they perceive as assertive military and strategic activities by Turkey in the region.

Reports suggest that discussions have taken place regarding the establishment of a rapid response force comprising approximately 2,500 personnel, with contributions of around 1,000 soldiers each from Israel and Greece, and 500 from Cyprus. This force is envisioned as a rapidly deployable unit capable of responding to crises on land, sea, or air, addressing emergent developments in the area. It would not be a permanent standing army, but rather a contingent ready for swift action when needed.

The Israeli Air Force, Navy, and the military’s foreign relations department are reportedly playing a prominent role in this initiative, with coordination occurring through governmental channels between the three countries. This military development coincides with ongoing political engagement, highlighting the multifaceted approach to regional security.
