Paramaribo, Suriname – In a horrific incident that has shocked the nation, a man killed nine people, including four of his own children, in a stabbing attack late Sunday in eastern Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname.
According to a police statement released early Monday, the suspect used a sharp object to murder four adults and five children. Another child and an adult were critically injured and are currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.
Authorities stated that officers from the Eastern District responded to the scene and were forced to open fire during the arrest of the suspect. The suspect reportedly attacked the officers with the same sharp object used in the killings. He was shot in the legs and transported to the emergency room under police supervision.
“Further details regarding the circumstances of this heinous attack will be released at a later time,” the police statement read.
Local media reports, citing neighbors near the scene in the eastern part of the capital, indicate that the man had a history of mental health issues. Four of the children killed were reportedly his own.
President Chan Santokhi expressed his condolences via social media, stating, “At a time when family and friends should be supporting each other, we are confronted with the harsh reality that there is another face to the world. A father has taken the lives of his children and killed his neighbors. I wish all those grieving strength, courage, and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.”
