Algiers – Algeria has initiated a national task force to establish a comprehensive virus research center and a vaccine production facility. This strategic move underscores the nation’s commitment to bolstering health sovereignty and advancing scientific research and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The Minister of Health, Professor Mohamed Sadik Ait Mesoudan, alongside the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Dr. Wassim Kouideri, inaugurated the multi-sectoral task force on Monday, December 29, 2025, at the Ministry of Health headquarters. The task force is mandated to oversee the development of an integrated center dedicated to virus research, coupled with the creation of a national vaccine production plant.
This initiative aligns with presidential directives aimed at strengthening national health security and enhancing Algeria’s capabilities in scientific research and pharmaceutical production. It also follows recommendations from the Prime Minister and stems from the outcomes of a joint ministerial meeting held on October 18, 2025.
Comprising 22 experts and representatives from key sectors, including National Defense, Health, Pharmaceutical Industry, Industry, Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the National Agency for Health Security, the task force reflects the project’s national and scientific significance.
The overarching goal is to develop advanced national capabilities in research, development, and vaccine production, ensuring self-sufficiency, healthcare system sustainability, and enhanced preparedness for future epidemics and health challenges. The project also seeks to elevate Algeria’s scientific and health standing regionally and internationally.
During the inauguration, the Minister of Health emphasized the task force’s significant national responsibility, requiring professionalism, precision, and adherence to the highest international scientific standards. He affirmed that their mandate extends beyond project oversight to include the development of a comprehensive scientific strategy, resource assessment, and the unification of efforts across various sectors, in accordance with national health and pharmaceutical policies. The aim is to transform health challenges into opportunities for progress.
