Algiers, December 30, 2025 – Security services in the Algiers province have dismantled a criminal network specializing in the production and distribution of counterfeit tobacco products. The operation, conducted by the Research and Intervention Brigade of the Provincial Judicial Police, represents a significant blow to the illegal tobacco trade and a direct threat to the national economy.
According to a statement released by the National Security services, the operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding clandestine workshops involved in the illicit production of tobacco. Subsequent field investigations led to the identification of the suspects, resulting in the issuance of search warrants.
The operation culminated in the arrest of 12 individuals and the seizure of a substantial quantity of counterfeit tobacco products. Authorities confiscated 687,200 units of loose-leaf tobacco (chema), 68,720 packs of cigarettes, 1,279 boxes of incense charcoal used for shisha, 3,209 electronic cigarettes and accessories, 350 boxes of premium Cuban cigars, 185 cartons of transparent rolling paper, and 156 bags of flavored shisha tobacco (moassel). In addition to the counterfeit tobacco, authorities seized 3,242,000 Algerian Dinars, six passenger vehicles, and one commercial vehicle.
The arrested individuals have been presented before the Public Prosecutor for further investigation and legal proceedings. The authorities are committed to pursuing all available legal avenues to ensure that those involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit goods are brought to justice.
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Algerian law enforcement to combat economic crimes and protect consumers from the dangers of counterfeit products.
