Algeria’s UN Envoy: Words That Echo Through History

New York, December 31, 2025 – As Algeria concludes its non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council, the impact of its representation, particularly through the words of Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the UN, continues to resonate.

Ambassador Bendjama’s tenure has been marked by moments of profound diplomatic significance. His statements have become symbolic of an era where truth prevailed despite considerable obstacles.

Culminating his term, Ambassador Bendjama was recognized as ‘Diplomat of the Year 2025’ by PassBlue, a US-based platform specializing in UN affairs. This accolade acknowledges his distinguished career characterized by courage, clarity, and unwavering commitment to principles. Furthermore, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune awarded him the National Order of Merit in recognition of his exceptional service in representing Algeria.

One particularly poignant moment was his address to the Security Council concerning the situation in Gaza. In a rare display of raw honesty, Ambassador Bendjama began by saying, ‘Brothers and sisters in Palestine, forgive us. You are in Gaza, consumed by fire and buried under rubble, and the Council has failed to protect you.’ This statement served as a stark indictment of the international community’s collective failure to safeguard civilian lives. It also conveyed a message of solidarity from the Algerian people: ‘We hear you.’

Following the United States’ veto of Algeria’s draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, Ambassador Bendjama remained resolute. He declared, ‘We will not tire, and we will not weary of returning to the Security Council to advocate for a cessation of hostilities.’ His subsequent words have become a mantra for diplomatic perseverance: ‘We will return to knock on the doors, carrying with us the souls of the innocent.’

These words, and others throughout his term, have cemented Ambassador Bendjama’s place in history as a voice of conscience and a champion for justice on the world stage.
