Algeria’s Firm Stance on Decolonization Efforts Underscored by Council of the Nation President

The President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Saleh Goujil, accompanied by a council delegation, received the President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s National Council, Hama Salama, in Algiers, highlighting Algeria’s unwavering and unconditional support for decolonization issues worldwide. The meeting was a chance to review global regional developments, especially in the occupied Palestinian territories, discussing the Western Sahara issue at length and exploring ways to enhance solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their struggle for self-determination. Goujil reiterated Algeria’s long-standing positions on decolonization, which are integral to its diplomatic approach and foreign policy, guided by the November Declaration, extending from its revolutionary history rejecting all forms of tyranny and occupation.

Goujil praised the resilience of the Sahrawi people led by the Polisario Front in the face of the occupying state’s defiance and blatant attempts to circumvent international legitimacy, seeking to prolong the conflict that threatens peace and stability in the region. He emphasized the need to break the media blockade on the Sahrawi issue and to reach out to the international community to activate legal confrontation, proposing to extend the European coordination of solidarity committees with the Sahrawi people to include Asian and Latin American countries to debunk the misleading narrative of the occupying state and to rally more support for the just Sahrawi cause.

Discussing the troubling international situation due to the brutal Zionist aggression on the occupied Palestinian territories, Goujil strongly condemned the international community’s complicity and indifference, calling for support of President Tebboune’s call to prosecute the Zionist entity in the International Criminal Court and human rights organizations to end impunity.

Hama Salama praised Algeria’s unwavering support for oppressed peoples worldwide, particularly its unconditional support for the Sahrawi people in their resistance against the wrongful occupation of their land and resources. He highlighted the steadfastness and effectiveness of Algeria’s positions, which do not succumb to bargaining, pressure, or blackmail, especially in a terrifying global context characterized by colonial powers’ assault on occupied peoples and severe humanitarian deviations in Palestine and Western Sahara.

Salama discussed the dire human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories, documented by all international reports, and reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s determination to resist occupation and face unethical strategies of stalling until the realization of their right to self-determination according to international law, calling for an end to the media blackout on the Sahrawi issue.

In conclusion, both parties agreed on the need to maintain and enhance the cooperation and coordination that characterize Algerian and Sahrawi parliamentarians through parliamentary diplomacy mechanisms.
