Syria Grapples with Winter Storm as 2025 Ends

Syria bid farewell to 2025 with a severe winter storm, bringing heavy snowfall, flooding, and widespread disruption. Authorities preemptively suspended classes in several governorates as the storm approached. Amidst the harsh conditions, a young child was injured, and civil defense teams are on high alert.

The snowstorm, which began impacting northern Syria early Wednesday, has exacerbated the already dire situation for displaced persons living in camps in Idlib (northwest) and rural Aleppo (north). Resources are stretched thin, leaving residents struggling to cope with the freezing temperatures.

State media reported that government efforts, spearheaded by the Civil Defense, are underway to provide assistance within available capabilities. However, conditions in displacement camps in Azaz, rural Aleppo, are particularly challenging. Residents face a critical lack of heating and aid, intensifying the suffering, especially among children and the elderly.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations and Disaster Management’s Early Warning and Preparedness Department announced that Civil Defense teams have been working since dawn to clear roads blocked by snow and heavy rainfall. Traffic remains difficult in some areas, according to state news agency SANA.

Several roads in Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia (northwest), and Hama (central) have been blocked by snow accumulation and flooding. Efforts to reopen these routes are ongoing. The Latakia Governorate reported flooding in shelters and buildings in the Al-Raml al-Janoubi area and other neighborhoods due to heavy rains.

Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution, follow safety guidelines, and contact emergency numbers for assistance. State media also reported that a four-year-old girl was injured in the village of al-Tuwayna in the Sahl al-Ghab area of rural Hama when the roof of her home collapsed.

DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
