The dawn of 2026 finds several Arab nations grappling with devastating conflicts and crippling crises, with little prospect of immediate relief. From Palestine to other regions, the new year begins under the shadow of ongoing turmoil.
In Palestine, the residents of the Gaza Strip commenced the year amidst relentless bombardment and reported Israeli offensives. Initial reports indicate a tragic incident in Jabalia, where multiple Palestinian lives were lost in the early hours of the new year. Gaza enters 2026 burdened by the ongoing conflict and the effects of restricted access, resulting in a deteriorating humanitarian situation. Efforts towards recovery are reportedly hampered, and fundamental issues such as reconstruction and border access remain unresolved, casting a long shadow over the new year.
The healthcare sector faces an unprecedented crisis, with a reported large number of wounded individuals, including those with severe injuries requiring long-term rehabilitation. Furthermore, thousands of cancer and chronic disease patients are at risk due to shortages of essential medicines and the partial or complete shutdown of medical facilities.
The issue of shelter and displacement remains a critical concern, with a significant number of families reportedly homeless and reliant on inadequate temporary shelters. Restrictions on the entry of building materials are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, particularly as harsh weather conditions intensify the suffering of Gazans.
Education and infrastructure have also suffered significantly. Reports indicate a large number of students are unable to attend school due to the destruction of educational facilities. The fate of those missing under the rubble, along with the bodies of deceased Palestinians held by Israeli forces, remains a deeply painful issue for Gazans as they enter the new year.
West Bank: Expansion and Violations
The situation in the occupied West Bank is reportedly no better. The region enters the new year under the weight of alleged Israeli violations and continued settlement expansion. DZWatch will continue to monitor and report on these developments.
