Oran, Algeria – Young Algerian swimmer Mehdi Dahamna has broken the national record in the 800m freestyle (short course) at the National Open Championships held at the Miloud Hadefi Sports Complex in Oran. Dahamna, representing Mouloudia Club of Algiers (MCA), achieved the impressive feat during the competition.
Born in 2008, Dahamna clocked a new record time of 7 minutes, 59 seconds, and 53 hundredths of a second. This surpasses the previous record of 8 minutes, 06 seconds, and 93 hundredths of a second, which was set by Anis Djaballah in 2019. This achievement is considered one of the highlights of the championship.
This performance highlights the significant progress of Mehdi Dahamna, who is considered one of the most promising emerging talents in Algerian swimming. Achieving this record at such a young age reflects the strong foundational work being done by Mouloudia Club of Algiers, along with the intensive preparations the swimmer has undergone recently.
The 800m race witnessed intense competition among the nation’s top swimmers. However, Dahamna dominated the race from the early stages, maintaining a consistent pace that allowed him to finish with a new record time.
This achievement is expected to open new horizons for the young swimmer, enhancing his chances of joining the national teams for upcoming continental and international events. Algerian swimming continues to show positive signs at the youth levels.
In other news from the championships, Nesrine Moudjahid, also from MCA, broke the national record in the 100m individual medley with a time of 1 minute, 02 seconds, and 94 hundredths of a second. This is her second record-breaking performance at the competition, following her record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 27 seconds and 43 hundredths of a second.
