Algiers, January 2, 2026 – Brahim Bougali, President of the National People’s Assembly, has expressed his condolences following the death of prominent historian and Mujahid, Mohammed Harbi, who passed away at the age of 93.
In a message posted on his official social media account on Friday, Bougali paid tribute to Harbi’s significant contributions to Algerian history and intellectual thought. He described the deceased as a pillar of Algerian historical and intellectual heritage.
“I extend my sincerest condolences to the family of the late historian and Mujahid, Mohammed Harbi, a leading figure in Algeria’s history and intellectual landscape, who dedicated his life to struggle, research, and enriching the national memory,” Bougali wrote.
Harbi was a key figure in the Algerian War of Independence and a prolific writer on Algerian history and politics. His work often explored themes of nationalism, identity, and the challenges of post-colonial development. His contributions have been pivotal in shaping the understanding of Algeria’s past and present.
Bougali concluded his message by saying, “We ask God Almighty to grant him his mercy and inspire his family with patience and solace. Verily, we belong to God, and to Him we shall return.”
