Traffic Law Revision Still Under Review, Interior Ministry Clarifies

The Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and National Planning has confirmed that the proposed revisions to the traffic law remain under consideration as part of the established legislative process. This announcement was made following a consultative meeting held with social partners on Friday.

The meeting, chaired by the Secretary-General of the Ministry on behalf of Minister Said Saayoud, included representatives from several key organizations. These included the National Organization of Algerian Transporters, the National Union of Transporters, the General Union of Algerian Traders and Craftsmen, the General Union of Algerian Workers, and the National Taxi Drivers Union under the umbrella of the General Union of Algerian Workers.

According to a statement released by the Ministry, clarifications were provided to the social partners after carefully considering their concerns. The Ministry emphasized that the draft law is open to further enrichment based on the feedback and suggestions received. This aims to clarify discussions and address concerns surrounding the proposed changes.

Regarding transport fares, ministry officials indicated that the matter would be carefully studied, taking into account the social aspects of public service and the affordability for citizens. The Ministry is committed to balancing these factors.

This move by the Ministry comes after a strike by a number of bus and truck drivers protesting against fuel price increases and certain provisions outlined in the proposed new traffic law. The Ministry hopes to address these concerns through continued dialogue and revisions to the draft legislation.
