A potential increase in public transport fares is on the horizon, DZWatch has learned. Following a consultative meeting held at the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, a study into revising public transport fares for passengers is underway.
SOVÉRAL, the public company responsible for managing land terminal stations, announced the agreement to consider a fare increase in a statement released Saturday. The decision stems from discussions held with various stakeholders in the land transport sector.
A pivotal meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday to specifically examine the proposed fare adjustments across different modes of transport, including both urban and inter-wilaya (inter-state) services. The discussions will aim to determine the extent and implementation of the potential price increases.
Separately, the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport affirmed on Friday that the draft traffic law remains under review within the established legislative process. The ministry emphasized that the proposed law is subject to further enrichment and modification based on feedback and suggestions from social partners.
This assurance came during a consultative meeting chaired by the Secretary-General of the Ministry, representing Minister Said Sayoud. The meeting included representatives from the National Organization of Algerian Transporters, the National Federation of Transporters, the General Union of Algerian Traders and Craftsmen, the General Union of Algerian Workers, and the National Union of Taxi Drivers.
The ministry stated that the concerns of professionals were heard, and clarifications were provided regarding discussions surrounding the draft traffic law. The ministry also underscored that the transport fare issue would be studied, taking into account citizens’ purchasing power and the social nature of public service.
The National Union of Taxi Drivers also released a statement outlining the outcomes of their meeting with the Secretary-General of the Ministry. According to the union, the discussions, conducted with the approval of the highest authorities in the country, resulted in an agreement to officially increase transport fares, amend the traffic law to reflect the specific needs and demands of professionals in the sector, and support the transport sector with accompanying measures aimed at improving the working conditions of those employed within it.
