Algeria’s Traffic Law Under Review: A New Vision for Road Safety

Algiers – A draft revision of Algeria’s traffic law is currently under consideration, outlining a fresh approach to bolstering road safety and establishing sustainable traffic security. The proposed changes encompass a range of procedural and preventative measures aimed at minimizing traffic accidents through a balanced strategy emphasizing both prevention and deterrence, all within a long-term security framework.

The draft law is undergoing review as part of the established legislative process. It is slated for presentation to the Council of the Nation for debate and voting, and has not yet been enacted. According to sources, the project remains open to amendments based on feedback and proposals. This was highlighted during a consultative meeting held between the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, and social partners in the transportation sector. The meeting addressed various issues related to the proposed legislation.

Comprising over 190 articles, with more than 50 new provisions, the revised traffic law places significant emphasis on preventative measures, reflecting the state’s commitment to ensuring road safety and security requirements. This focus is evident through mechanisms designed to organize the institutional framework responsible for achieving road safety and realizing a vision of sustainable traffic security, while also establishing strict controls to guarantee safe driving practices.

These controls and preventative measures include enforcing technical specifications for vehicles and procedural measures to ensure driver safety. Furthermore, the law emphasizes ensuring appropriate and continuous maintenance of road infrastructure, as well as implementing procedural provisions for inspection and equipping relevant departments with digital monitoring equipment. The goal is to move towards automated control through the use of automated systems for detecting traffic violations.

The legislation also seeks to foster a culture of reporting among citizens and encourage the involvement of civil society in all its forms in the effort to improve road safety across the nation.
