Taiz Children’s Hospital Overwhelmed Amid Funding Crisis

Taiz, Yemen – The Yemeni-Swedish Hospital for Mother and Child in Taiz is grappling with a severe crisis, leaving thousands of sick children and their families struggling to access essential medical care. The hospital, the only specialized government facility for pediatric treatment in the province, faces immense pressure due to a surge in patients and a critical shortage of resources.

The situation has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of international aid organizations and a significant reduction in the hospital’s operational budget. Sources within the hospital have revealed that current resources cover only approximately 20% of the facility’s needs since the departure of key supporters.

The lack of consistent funding, particularly since October 2025, has directly impacted the quality and availability of services. A recent visit to the hospital revealed overcrowded waiting areas, emergency rooms, and outpatient clinics, even during early morning hours. The hospital receives patients from across Taiz province and neighboring regions, many requiring urgent interventions, medications, and medical supplies that are in short supply.

Dr. Sami al-Sharabi, the hospital director, emphasized the facility’s critical role as the sole referral center for pediatric care in Taiz. He stated that the absence of international support has severely hampered the hospital’s ability to provide the level of care it once offered.

“We are receiving extremely critical cases that demand medicines, medical supplies, and continuous support to save children’s lives,” Dr. al-Sharabi explained, expressing hope for the return of international organizations to support this vital institution.

Last year, the hospital attended to approximately 370,000 children and mothers suffering from various illnesses and health conditions. Despite limited resources, the hospital strives to provide services at nominal fees to ensure continued operation. The emergency department is particularly strained, struggling to cope with the constant influx of patients requiring immediate attention. The future of pediatric healthcare in Taiz hangs in the balance, dependent on renewed support to alleviate the suffering of its most vulnerable citizens.
