New Car Tax Eliminated at Customs Starting 2026

Algerian Customs authorities announced yesterday the elimination of mandatory tax payments on new vehicles during the customs clearance process, effective January 1, 2026. This change is part of the amendments introduced by the 2026 Finance Law.

The decision follows the modification of Article 147 bis of the Stamp Duty Law. Importers will no longer be required to submit proof of tax payment for new passenger vehicles as part of their customs declaration documents.

Authorities have confirmed that customs declarations registered before January 1, 2026, will remain subject to the previous regulations and will require tax payment in accordance with the legislation in force at that time. This means that any vehicles imported and cleared through customs before the stated date will still be subject to the existing tax requirements.

This amendment is expected to reduce the tax burden on importers and citizens, while also stimulating vehicle imports. The move is anticipated to positively impact the local market by streamlining customs procedures and encouraging investment in the automotive sector. The government hopes that this measure will lead to a more efficient and competitive market for new vehicles in Algeria.

The elimination of this tax is a significant step toward simplifying the import process and making new cars more accessible to the Algerian population.
