Annaba, Algeria – Tragedy struck the city of Annaba today as two women succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident occurred in the 19 Juin neighborhood of El Hadjar, according to a statement released by the Civil Protection services.
Civil Protection units responded to a call at approximately 1:27 PM local time reporting a case of carbon monoxide poisoning within a residence. Upon arrival at the scene, first responders discovered two female victims suffering from the effects of the toxic gas, which emanated from a water heater inside the home.
Unfortunately, both women were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were subsequently transported to the morgue at the local hospital.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of carbon monoxide, particularly during the colder months when heating appliances are in frequent use. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly when inhaled.
The Civil Protection services are once again urging citizens to take preventative measures to safeguard themselves and their families from carbon monoxide poisoning. They emphasize the critical importance of regular maintenance for heating systems and water heaters. Proper ventilation within homes is also essential to prevent the build-up of the deadly gas.
Furthermore, authorities strongly recommend the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in all homes. These devices can provide an early warning of dangerous carbon monoxide levels, allowing residents to evacuate and seek assistance before it’s too late. Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and prevent future tragedies.
