Caracas, Venezuela – Venezuelan authorities announced Tuesday that at least 24 security personnel were killed during the US attack on Venezuela last Saturday. The assault culminated in the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his subsequent transfer to the United States.
The announcement came during a press conference held by Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab and other officials addressing the casualties resulting from the January 3rd attack. Saab stated that dozens of officials and civilians were killed in the midnight assault. He further asserted that prosecutors would investigate these deaths as potential “war crimes.”
Other officials confirmed the deaths of at least 24 security personnel. The attack, launched on Saturday, saw the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. They were then transported to the United States, a move that has been met with widespread condemnation from across the globe.
Following the operation, the US President declared that the United States would oversee affairs in Venezuela until a secure, appropriate, and reasonable transition of power could be achieved.
On Monday, the detained President Nicolas Maduro appeared before a US court in New York for his initial hearing. He rejected the charges levied against him, which include leading a corrupt and illegitimate government and collaborating with drug traffickers. The situation in Venezuela remains tense following the events of the past week.
