US Actions Threaten Global Order, Expert Warns

A prominent American political scientist has issued a stark warning about the future of international law, suggesting that the system established after World War II is facing a critical turning point. Professor Oona Hathaway, a professor of law and political science at Yale University, argues that the erosion of restrictions on the use of military force between nations is accelerating, placing the entire global order at risk.

In a recent op-ed, Professor Hathaway, former president of the American Society of International Law, highlights a covert military operation allegedly conducted by the United States against Venezuela as a pivotal moment. The alleged operation, purportedly aimed at apprehending Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is described as a blatant violation of international legal norms.

The Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, has accused the United States of violating his country’s sovereignty and demanded the release of President Maduro. During an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Ambassador Moncada asserted that Venezuela has been targeted due to its natural resources, condemning the alleged US action as an illegitimate act of aggression and a violation of the UN Charter.

Professor Hathaway’s analysis suggests that the world, which has largely avoided direct great power conflicts for eight decades thanks to international law, now stands on the precipice of a return to an era where military might dictates international relations. This shift, she contends, undermines the foundations of a system that, despite its imperfections, has successfully curbed large-scale wars between major powers.

The implications of this alleged operation extend beyond any single nation, according to Professor Hathaway, who is also a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She argues that it sets a dangerous precedent that could unravel the entire international legal framework.
