Iranian President Orders Differentiation Amidst Protests

President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a distinction to be made between peaceful protestors and violent actors amidst ongoing demonstrations in Iran. According to reports, the President issued directives to refrain from taking action against ordinary demonstrators while emphasizing a firm stance against those deemed ‘rioters’.

Following a cabinet meeting, Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaem Panah stated that President Pezeshkian instructed authorities to avoid security measures against protestors and participants in rallies. However, he clarified that individuals carrying firearms, knives, or other weapons, and attacking police stations or military sites, would be considered ‘rioters’ and treated accordingly. This distinction is crucial, according to the administration, to address legitimate grievances while maintaining order.

These developments come as widespread protests, fueled by discontent over economic conditions, enter their eleventh day. The demonstrations have resulted in casualties and continue to pose a significant challenge to the government. Here’s a breakdown of key developments:

A Two-Pronged Approach: The President’s message reflects a dual strategy of de-escalation and deterrence. While signaling tolerance for peaceful assembly, the government appears determined to suppress violence and maintain control. This approach echoes earlier statements from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who acknowledged ‘legitimate demands’ while condemning ‘rioters’.

Military Warns Against External Interference: Amidst the internal unrest, the Iranian military has issued strong warnings against potential foreign intervention. Army Commander Amir Hatami condemned statements from the United States and Israel, specifically citing threats of military action should protestors be harmed. Hatami warned that such statements are viewed as ‘threats’ and would not be tolerated. He further asserted that any aggression would be met with a decisive response.

Tensions Escalate in Tehran: For the first time since the protests began, clashes reportedly erupted in central Tehran. The situation remains volatile, and the government’s response will likely shape the trajectory of the unrest in the coming days.
