US Envoy Urges De-escalation in Aleppo Amid Rising Tensions

The United States is closely monitoring the escalating situation in the Ashrafiyeh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods of Aleppo, Syria, according to a statement released Thursday by US Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack.

Barrack, also the US Ambassador to Ankara, expressed deep concern over the ongoing developments and called for restraint from all parties involved, emphasizing the urgent need to protect civilian lives and property. His statement, posted on platform X, underscores Washington’s commitment to de-escalating the conflict between the Syrian Army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“We urgently appeal to the leadership of the Syrian government, the Syrian Democratic Forces, local authorities in Kurdish-administered areas, and all armed actors on the ground: cease hostilities, end the tension immediately, and commit to de-escalation,” Barrack stated.

The US envoy highlighted the significant progress made in the past 13 months towards stability, peace, and reconstruction in Syria. He reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to a vision for Syria that is inclusive of all segments of society, including Sunnis, Kurds, Druze, Christians, Alawites, and other communities, ensuring the rights and security of every citizen.

Tensions in Aleppo have risen following reports of civilian casualties. Earlier on Thursday, reports indicated a rise in civilian casualties due to attacks in Aleppo. The Syrian Army has reportedly initiated concentrated shelling of SDF positions within the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh districts, alleging that the group has transformed these areas into military headquarters and launching pads for attacks against the city’s neighborhoods and residents. The US is prepared to assist in efforts to de-escalate the situation.
