Pakistan Poised to Supply Sudanese Army with $1.5 Billion in Arms

Islamabad is reportedly nearing a substantial arms deal with Khartoum, potentially bolstering the Sudanese military’s capabilities in its ongoing conflict. The deal, estimated at $1.5 billion, is said to include attack aircraft, drones, and advanced air defense systems.

According to sources, the agreement between Pakistan and Sudan is in its final stages. This development could provide crucial external support to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) as they confront the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The potential influx of weaponry could significantly impact the balance of power in the region.

The arms package allegedly comprises ten Karakoram-8 light attack aircraft, over 200 reconnaissance and attack drones, and sophisticated air defense systems. A retired Pakistani Air Force Marshal, familiar with the matter, indicated that the deal is “as good as done.” He also suggested the inclusion of Super Mushaq trainer aircraft and possibly JF-17 fighter jets, co-developed with China and manufactured in Pakistan.

The provision of drones and fighter jets, in particular, could aid the SAF in regaining air superiority, which it initially held at the start of the conflict. The RSF has increasingly utilized drones to gain control of territory, posing a significant challenge to the SAF’s position on the battlefield.

Sudan has been embroiled in a bloody conflict between the SAF and the RSF since April 2023, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. The potential arms deal with Pakistan raises concerns about the escalation of the conflict and its impact on regional stability. DZWatch continues to monitor the situation closely.

Neither the Pakistani military, the Ministry of Defence, nor a Sudanese military spokesperson have issued official statements regarding this potential arms deal.
