The Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure has announced the commencement of a comprehensive maintenance program targeting the nation’s road network and highways. This initiative, launched under the directives of Minister Abdelkader Djellawi, aims to enhance the quality and longevity of Algeria’s vital transportation infrastructure.
The program’s initial phase began this morning at the Chaoua tunnel exit in Khraissia, along the second bypass of Algiers. This marks the start of a nationwide effort, integrated within the broader 2026 agenda, to improve road conditions across all Algerian provinces.
This initiative reflects the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the durability and quality of the road network through targeted interventions and essential projects. The year 2025 saw the completion of numerous projects under the ongoing maintenance program. A total of 2,300 kilometers of national and regional roads benefited from regular maintenance, ensuring their continued usability. Furthermore, repairs were completed on 28.4 kilometers of deteriorated highway sections across ten provinces, improving traffic safety and flow.
Critical expansion joint replacements were also carried out, with 365 linear meters replaced on highways in Ain Defla, Algiers, Boumerdes, and Bouira, thus safeguarding the long-term integrity of these essential structures.
A technical assessment covering 51 kilometers of highways in Algiers, Blida, Boumerdes, and Bouira has been conducted, providing a detailed diagnosis to prioritize future interventions. Currently, work is progressing on the rehabilitation of 16.3 kilometers of deteriorated highways and the replacement of 1,791 linear meters of expansion joints on various engineering structures along the highway network. Maintenance is also underway on 1,800 kilometers of national and regional roads, ensuring the network remains at the highest standards of service and quality.
Looking ahead, 2026 will see the launch of a significant investment program aimed at further bolstering Algeria’s road infrastructure.
