Syrian Army Enters Sheikh Maqsoud: Online Reactions Mixed

The entry of Syrian security forces into the Sheikh Maqsoud district of Aleppo has sparked a wave of reactions online. Social media users have been sharing footage purportedly showing the initial moments of the army’s arrival in the northern Syrian neighborhood.

Earlier today, the Syrian Army announced that it was nearing the completion of clearing operations in Sheikh Maqsoud following days of clashes with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters. The Syrian government has been working to restore order in the area.

Amidst these efforts, reports emerged of aerial activity over Aleppo. According to sources, an SDF drone launched from Deir Hafer, a town in the Aleppo countryside, targeted the General Security building in the city, resulting in injuries to one officer. Subsequently, another drone reportedly targeted the Aleppo Governorate building, where a meeting was being held between the Ministers of Information and Social Affairs, and the Governor of Aleppo.

The SDF has denied targeting civilian areas in Aleppo.

According to the Syrian Minister of Information, remaining SDF fighters have allegedly taken refuge in Al-Yassin Hospital, using civilians as human shields.

Reports indicate that around 300 SDF members were present in the Sheikh Maqsoud district earlier today, with some forces and commanders reportedly withdrawing from Aleppo overnight towards northeastern Syria.

Yesterday, Syrian authorities granted SDF fighters a deadline to withdraw with their light weapons to Deir Hafer, in the eastern Aleppo countryside. However, upon the arrival of buses intended for their transport, SDF elements allegedly opened fire on the vehicles before the transfer could begin.

Online, Syrians have expressed diverse opinions regarding the Syrian authorities’ entry into Sheikh Maqsoud after days of clashes with the SDF.

One user, Abu Noah, commented that the March agreement is over, and the PKK is now in control of the SDF. Another user, Ahmed, expressed the view that Sheikh Maqsoud is completely liberated, and that all of Aleppo is now free. Sami called for everyone to participate in the institutions of the state.
