Algeria Bows Out of African Cup After Defeat to Nigeria

January 10, 2026 – The Algerian national football team, “Les Verts,” have been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Nigeria in the quarter-final.

Algeria failed to replicate their previous performances, appearing fatigued and unable to match the high tempo imposed by the Nigerian side, known as the “Super Eagles.” The first half concluded in a goalless draw, a physically demanding period for the Algerian team, who committed defensive errors that nearly resulted in conceding an early goal.

Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 47th minute of the second half through Osimhen, followed by a second goal in the 57th minute by Akor Adams, effectively sealing their dominance over the match. Les Verts struggled to respond effectively.

The match was also marked by controversial decisions from the referee, who seemingly denied Algeria a clear penalty in the early stages of the first half. Furthermore, Senegal’s referee, Issa Sy, issued several questionable yellow cards to Algerian players. However, these contentious calls should not diminish Nigeria’s deserved victory, as they delivered a strong performance and earned their place in the next round.

The Algerian team will return home to reflect on their campaign and prepare for future challenges, while Nigeria continues their pursuit of the African Cup of Nations title.
