In a significant diplomatic event, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria directed a powerful message to the attendees of the African Union’s Committee of Ten (C-10) meeting, which focuses on the reform of the United Nations Security Council. The speech, delivered on President Tebboune’s behalf by Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf, highlighted the contemporary challenges and risks threatening global peace and security.

President Tebboune emphasized the critical state of the international and regional environment, marked by escalating crises and conflicts. He noted the ineffective response of the international community to these urgent issues, underscoring the need for a proactive and political initiative.

The President specifically addressed the African continent’s share of these challenges, particularly in the Sahel region, plagued by terrorism, organized crime, and instability. He also touched on the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people, stressing the failure of the international system to deter Israeli violations of international law.

Underlining the urgency for reform in the UN Security Council, President Tebboune called for a rigorous and resolute approach from the international community. This reform is not only about better representation for developing countries, especially Africa, but also about the sustainability of the multilateral international system.

Algeria, in its upcoming membership in the Security Council, alongside Sierra Leone and Mozambique, vows to enhance Africa’s voice within this global body and defend the aspirations of its nations under the African Union’s banner.

President Tebboune also advocated for rectifying the historical injustice against Africa, notably its absence in the category of permanent members and underrepresentation in the non-permanent category. He called for a comprehensive and integrated reform project that goes beyond membership expansion to include operational methods, veto rights, and interactions between the Council and central UN bodies.

In his speech, the President stressed the importance of adhering to the United Nations General Assembly and its intergovernmental negotiations as the inclusive and consensual framework for addressing the Security Council reform issue.

This key meeting reflects Algeria’s commitment to significant international issues and its role in fostering global peace and stability.
