President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Iran has reached out to the United States, suggesting potential negotiations amidst escalating tensions. Trump’s claim follows his recent threats of action related to what he described as a crackdown against Iranian protestors.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump indicated that his administration is currently engaged in discussions to arrange a possible meeting with Iranian representatives. “I think they’re tired of getting pummeled by the United States… Iran wants to negotiate,” he stated.
However, the President also cautioned that he might be compelled to act unilaterally if diplomatic efforts fail to yield results. These remarks come against a backdrop of increasing reports suggesting the Trump administration is exploring new options regarding potential actions against Iran. Simultaneously, human rights organizations are reporting a rising death toll among protestors, drawing parallels to events of last June.
Last year, Trump announced a planned sixth round of nuclear talks with Iran, initially scheduled to be held in Muscat. This followed five previous rounds of discussions. However, prior to the planned meeting, Israel launched surprise strikes within Iranian territory, igniting unprecedented tensions between the two nations. Subsequently, Washington initiated Operation Midnight Hammer, targeting key nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Tehran denounced this operation as an act of deception.
Reports at the time suggested a campaign of misinformation preceded the strikes. An Israeli official indicated that Tel Aviv and Washington orchestrated a complex media campaign to convince Iran that a military attack was not imminent, while simultaneously implying disagreements between Trump and then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The perceived division between Washington and Tel Aviv was reportedly amplified through media channels, with the possibility of a diplomatic resolution being promoted as a precursor to a surprise strike.
Trump has reiterated his warning to Iranian authorities, affirming that he is considering “very strong options” and that the U.S. military is evaluating various scenarios. Sources indicate that the President is actively discussing the potential for strikes against Iranian targets.
