Algiers – The Algerian government is accelerating the process of upgrading eleven administrative districts into fully functional provinces (wilayas), DZWatch has learned.
The Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Urban Planning has initiated a series of field visits to assess the readiness of these districts. This move is a key component of the nation’s ongoing regional reorganization and decentralization efforts.
This initiative aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives to achieve balanced development across all regions of Algeria. The goal is to bring the administration closer to the citizens and implement the provisions of the amended Law No. 84-09 concerning regional organization.
Under the instructions of the Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Urban Planning, Said Saayoud, specialized committees from the ministry have developed a detailed roadmap. These committees are conducting on-site inspections of the districts to evaluate their technical and functional preparedness, as well as the necessary organizational structures for a successful transition.
During these visits, the committees are focused on identifying potential shortcomings and assessing logistical and human resource needs. This ensures that the new provinces will be equipped to effectively carry out their developmental and administrative responsibilities.
The upgrade is expected to stimulate local development, improve the quality of public services, and promote regional balance. It is part of a comprehensive vision to reorganize the national territory in a way that meets the aspirations of citizens and the requirements of sustainable development.
