Somalia Terminates All Agreements with UAE, Affirms Sovereignty

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the termination of all existing agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing concerns over national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement released today, the Somali Council of Ministers declared that the decision was made following a comprehensive review of recent developments and credible reports indicating actions that undermine Somalia’s political independence and national unity. The government asserts that these actions violate the principles of sovereignty and non-interference, as enshrined in the charters of the United Nations, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Arab League – all organizations in which Somalia is an active member.

The sweeping decision encompasses all forms of cooperation and agreements, including those related to security and defense, as well as arrangements involving government agencies, affiliated entities, and regional administrations within Somalia. Notably, the termination extends to agreements concerning the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo. The Somali government emphasized that the management of ports, security affairs, and foreign policy fall exclusively under the sovereign rights of the Federal Government.

The Council of Ministers has tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with formally notifying the UAE government of the decision. Furthermore, regional and international partners will be informed, reaffirming Somalia’s sovereign rights and full constitutional powers. The government underscored that this action reflects the will of the Somali people, who have consistently expressed their opposition to any practices that compromise the country’s sovereignty or weaken its unity.

Somalia reiterated its commitment to international cooperation based on mutual respect, explicit recognition of its sovereignty and independence, and adherence to international law and the national constitution. The government maintains that the decision was taken in the best interests of the Somali nation.
