Medvedev Warns US on Greenland: ‘No New Stars on Your Flag’

Moscow, January 13, 2026 – Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, issued a stark warning to the United States on Monday regarding Greenland, suggesting that the island’s residents might vote to join Russia if Washington doesn’t act swiftly. His statement comes amidst renewed speculation surrounding American interest in the Arctic territory.

Medvedev, as reported by Russian news agency Interfax, stated that Greenlanders could opt for Russian affiliation if President Trump doesn’t rapidly pursue the island’s acquisition. He alluded to unverified information suggesting a potential snap referendum where Greenland’s 55,000 inhabitants could vote on joining Russia. “Trump should hurry,” Medvedev reportedly said. “According to unverified information, in a few days a surprise referendum may take place, in which all 55,000 inhabitants of Greenland could vote to join Russia. Then it’s over. No new small stars on the (American) flag.”

The Kremlin has not officially commented on renewed US interest in Greenland. However, Russia has consistently emphasized the Arctic’s importance as a region of national and strategic interest. Last year, Moscow stated it was closely monitoring the ongoing debate surrounding Greenland.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, following discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, stated that he does not anticipate any military action by the United States to acquire Greenland. Wadephul welcomed planned US-Danish talks regarding the island, noting a shared interest with the US in addressing security issues arising in the Arctic region.

“NATO is currently developing more realistic plans regarding this matter, and they will be discussed later with our American partners,” Wadephul added. His visit precedes anticipated talks in Washington on Wednesday between Rubio and senior diplomats from Denmark and Greenland, which enjoys self-governance under Danish sovereignty.

Reports indicate that Denmark aims to present a united front with Greenland’s leaders before the meeting with the American side.
