President’s Appeal: A ‘Father’s Compassion’ for Algerians Abroad

Algiers – A member of parliament representing the Algerian diaspora has lauded President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent appeal to young Algerians abroad facing precarious or irregular situations. The MP described the President’s initiative as ‘a call stemming from forward-looking security assessments.’

Speaking to DZWatch, MP Farès Rahmani stated, ‘We thank God for the attention of the highest authorities of the country to this matter. We have observed the mobilization of agents to spread alarmist and false news, and to diminish the efforts undertaken by the state.’ He emphasized that the President’s decision would ‘save many Algerians abroad from falling into traps set for them by terrorist movements, such as the separatist MAK movement.’

Rahmani continued, ‘The President’s appeal is a call from a compassionate father. It is a message that the homeland is large enough for everyone, and this call has instilled great confidence in young people.’ He added that this initiative offers hope and a path back for those who may have been misled or exploited.

Regarding the expected procedures following this decision, the diaspora representative revealed that he had received numerous inquiries seeking assistance in regularizing the situations of these young individuals. He advised them to contact the consulates directly to initiate the necessary procedures.

President Tebboune’s appeal specifically targets young Algerians abroad in vulnerable and illegal circumstances, many of whom were deliberately misled by individuals seeking to undermine the state’s credibility and exploit them against their own country. According to a statement from the Council of Ministers, many of these young people have committed only minor offenses, such as fearing a summons from the police or gendarmerie regarding matters related to public order.

The Council of Ministers’ statement further noted that ‘these young people are now far from their homeland, their families, and their friends, suffering from poverty and destitution, leading to their exploitation in degrading jobs, while some are used against their own country.’ The council, under the President’s leadership and with the full consensus of all state institutions, has decided to regularize the status of these Algerians, provided they commit to not re-offend.
