Communications Minister Condemns Treatment of National Team

Algiers, January 13, 2026 – The Minister of Communications has issued a strong condemnation of what he described as unfair treatment of the national football team, affectionately known as ‘Les Verts’ (The Greens), during recent sporting events. The Minister’s remarks highlight growing concerns over attempts to undermine Algerian achievements across various sectors.

Speaking at a seminar held at the Ministry headquarters today, focusing on copyright law in modern media, Minister Zouheir Bouamama stated that Algeria has been subjected to a series of reprehensible campaigns orchestrated by known entities. These campaigns, he asserted, aim to steal the nation’s heritage and the creative output of its citizens in various artistic and cultural fields. He further revealed that these attempts have now extended to the realm of sports.

“These practices are not limited to the cultural sector,” the Minister emphasized. “This piracy has reached the point of attempting to steal sporting championships and competitions.” He alluded to recent events, without explicitly naming them, that have sparked widespread outrage among Algerian fans.

In his address, Minister Bouamama reiterated the government’s unwavering support for the national team. He pledged continued encouragement and close monitoring of their preparations for major tournaments, most notably the upcoming 2026 World Cup. He expressed hope that the World Cup would be conducted with fairness and integrity, unlike the recent events that he suggested had tarnished the image of the African continent and the tournament itself.

“This tournament is supposed to be conducted in a spirit of fair and honest competition, unlike what we have seen recently from vile practices that have harmed the African continent and the tournament itself,” he stated.

The Minister’s comments reflect a growing sentiment within Algeria that the nation is being unfairly targeted. The government is committed to defending Algeria’s interests and ensuring that its achievements are recognized and respected on the international stage.
