deeply embedded in the national system since the declaration of November 1, 1954. In a meeting with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, Murad highlighted Algeria’s significant strides in human rights, particularly following the profound reforms initiated by the President and solidified by the 2020 constitutional amendment. These changes, he noted, have notably improved human rights on civil, political, economic, and social levels.

Murad further appreciated the qualitative addition brought by proposed amendments to laws governing associations, political parties, municipal, and provincial legislation. These amendments are expected to bolster public freedoms, participatory democracy, and enhance the involvement of societal actors in managing public affairs and promoting human rights, according to the statement.

Lawlor, presenting her mission’s framework, commended the Algerian authorities’ openness and cooperation. She acknowledged their efforts in advancing the status of human rights defenders, highlighting the inclusive approach involving government bodies, advisory institutions, and civil society in addressing human rights issues.
