National Gendarmerie in Annaba have dismantled a criminal network specializing in defrauding citizens through the use of information and communication technologies. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime in all its forms.
The operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding the activities of a criminal network. This network allegedly posed as representatives of Algérie Poste (Algeria Post), using digital platforms to deceive citizens. Subsequently, the National Gendarmerie’s research and investigation services in Annaba initiated a thorough investigation, supported by technical inquiries, which allowed them to identify the members of the network and their locations.
After completing all legal procedures, the territorial jurisdiction was extended to another province in the country, where the network members were apprehended and all the tools used in the commission of the crimes were seized.
The operation resulted in the arrest of ten individuals. Authorities also seized mobile phones, a laptop computer, a central processing unit (CPU), and a sum of money in national currency amounting to 52,000 Algerian dinars. The total financial transactions among the network members exceeded 1.6 billion centimes.
A legal file has been prepared, and the detainees have been brought before the competent judicial authorities in the region. They will be prosecuted on charges including forming an organized criminal group for the purpose of preparing a misdemeanor, fraud and swindling of others’ money using information and communication technologies, as well as harming automated data processing systems, fraudulently entering, altering, and deleting data, and the misdemeanor of impersonating another person under circumstances that could lead to the registration of a judgment in the criminal record of another person.
