Civil Protection Units Respond to Over 24,000 Incidents in One Week

Algeria’s Civil Protection units were extremely active between January 4th and 10th, responding to a staggering 24,089 calls for assistance across the country. These interventions encompassed a wide range of emergencies, highlighting the diverse responsibilities of the Civil Protection agency.

The most frequent calls involved medical evacuations. Units responded to 15,776 requests for medical assistance, providing aid and transporting 15,440 injured or ill individuals to hospitals. This underscores the critical role the Civil Protection plays in emergency medical services.

Road accidents remained a significant concern. During the reporting period, 1,165 traffic accidents required intervention from Civil Protection teams. These incidents resulted in 2,035 separate responses, tragically leading to 25 fatalities and 1,282 injuries. The most severe cluster of accidents occurred in Adrar province, where 12 accidents resulted in 5 deaths and 18 injuries.

Firefighters tackled a substantial number of blazes. Civil Protection units successfully extinguished 520 fires out of 888 fire-related interventions. These fires ranged from domestic and industrial incidents. The Algiers province recorded the highest number of fires with 89, followed by Blida (37) and Oran (36).

In addition to these major categories, Civil Protection units undertook 5,390 interventions in other operational areas. These efforts resulted in the rescue of 650 individuals and the coverage of 4,825 assistance operations.

Tragically, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning also presented a danger. Civil Protection services responded to 39 cases of CO poisoning, providing first aid to 77 affected individuals and transferring them to medical facilities. Sadly, these incidents resulted in 7 fatalities across the provinces of Bordj Bou Arreridj (2), Blida (2), Annaba (2), and Djelfa (1).

This weekly summary underscores the tireless work of the Civil Protection units nationwide, dedicated to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring public safety.
