January 15, 2026 – Algeria has significantly bolstered its presence and influence within the African Union (AU) throughout 2025, driven by a clear strategy and proactive diplomacy. Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algerian diplomacy has played a pivotal role in championing the interests of the African continent.
Guided by deeply rooted historical principles and a constructive approach, Algeria’s efforts are primarily focused on defending the interests of the African continent, strengthening its sovereignty, and solidifying its position on the international stage in line with continental and global challenges. This commitment has translated into tangible achievements within the AU framework.
In February 2025, Ambassador Salma Malika Haddadi was elected as Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. This election underscores Algeria’s prominent standing within the African community and reflects the confidence of AU member states in its leadership.
Furthermore, Algerian diplomacy actively supported the adoption of the Statute of the Continental Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Response, an initiative spearheaded by President Tebboune. It also championed the ratification of Algeria’s proposal to establish an African Day in memory of the African victims of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and apartheid. The adoption of the Oran Declaration, issued by the 2024 African Youth Forum, was another key achievement.
With a clear and transparent vision aimed at contributing to AU decisions in the realm of peace and security, Algeria secured a seat on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for a three-year term (2025-2028). This victory reflects the high regard that African nations hold for Algerian diplomacy, recognizing it as a force for peace grounded in its historical principles of defending just causes and promoting stability across the continent. This commitment to peace and security is a cornerstone of Algeria’s foreign policy.
