Putin Offers Mediation in Middle East Amidst Regional Tensions

Moscow, January 16, 2026 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has engaged in separate phone conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, addressing the escalating security situation in the Middle East.

The Kremlin confirmed that President Putin and Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed the current state of affairs in the region, with a particular focus on Iran. During the call, Putin offered Russia’s assistance in mediating discussions regarding Iran, aiming to foster a constructive dialogue involving all relevant nations. He reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to intensifying political and diplomatic efforts to ensure stability and security in the region.

According to the Kremlin statement, both leaders agreed to maintain ongoing communication between Russia and Israel at various levels.

In a separate call with Iranian President Pezeshkian, President Putin reiterated his commitment to de-escalating tensions in the Middle East. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters that Putin intends to continue his efforts to stabilize the region.

These diplomatic efforts come after President Putin’s remarks yesterday, where he noted a deterioration in the international landscape and an increasingly dangerous global environment. While he didn’t directly address specific issues such as the situation in Venezuela, relations with Iran, or the American President’s statements regarding Greenland, his comments underscored Russia’s concern over rising global tensions.

Addressing newly appointed ambassadors at the Kremlin, Putin stated, “We hear from those who believe they have the right to impose their will by force, to instruct others, and to issue commands.” He emphasized Russia’s firm commitment to the principles of a multipolar world. The situation in the Middle East remains a key focus for Russian diplomacy.
