The Chinese semiconductor company Nexperia has received approval from the Dutch government to acquire the electronic chip company “New Energy“. This approval comes after a review of the deal in light of Dutch national security considerations, Dutch Government Approves Chip Company Sale.

Bloomberg News Agency reported sources saying that the Dutch government does not see Nexperia’s acquisition of New Technology as a threat to Dutch national security, as the technology is not dual-use for both civilian and military purposes. This move indicates the Netherlands’ continued openness to Chinese investments.

Earlier this year, the Dutch authorities used a new law to investigate Nexperia’s acquisition of the Dutch firm New Energy. The new law gives the government the power to reject foreign companies’ acquisitions of Dutch companies for national security reasons.

New Energy produces small chips that facilitate companies in operating their devices with the energy they collect. Nexperia purchased New Energy in November 2022.

Nexperia itself was sold to Chinese investors in 2018 when Wingtech Technology acquired the Dutch company for 2.25 billion yuan (approximately 3.5 billion dollars).

A spokesperson for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs declined to comment on the news and stated that an official statement would be issued later.
