Algiers – A recent presidential decree is poised to significantly accelerate the modernization of Algeria’s agricultural sector and boost its productivity. The move has been hailed by agricultural leaders as a pivotal step forward.
The decree, issued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, establishes a national council dedicated to the mechanization of agriculture and the creation of specialized cooperatives for renting agricultural equipment. This initiative addresses a critical need for accessible and affordable modern farming technology.
Abdelatif Dilmi, Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Farmers, emphasized the importance of this decision. He stated that the creation of the national council will provide a centralized body to oversee and coordinate the mechanization process, ensuring efficient resource allocation and strategic planning.
The establishment of equipment rental cooperatives is also viewed as a game-changer, particularly for small and medium-sized farmers who may not have the capital to invest in expensive machinery. By providing access to modern equipment through affordable rental schemes, these cooperatives will empower farmers to improve their efficiency, increase their yields, and ultimately enhance their livelihoods.
“This is a turning point for Algerian agriculture,” Dilmi stated. “The President’s decision demonstrates a clear commitment to supporting our farmers and transforming our agricultural sector into a modern, productive, and sustainable industry.”
The initiative is expected to have a far-reaching impact on Algeria’s food security, reducing the country’s reliance on imports and fostering a more self-sufficient agricultural economy. The government hopes that by embracing mechanization and providing farmers with the necessary tools and resources, Algeria can unlock its agricultural potential and contribute to the nation’s overall economic growth.
