Syrian Gov’t Gives SDF 4 Days for Integration Plan

The Syrian government has granted the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) a four-day ultimatum to present a plan for integrating the Al-Hasakah Governorate into the state’s administrative structure. This demand is part of a ceasefire agreement reached between the two sides on Tuesday. The agreement has reportedly garnered support from the United States and received international commendation.

This development follows the Syrian Army’s recent gains in northern and northeastern Syria, areas previously under SDF control. According to a statement from the Syrian Presidency, Syrian forces will not enter the city centers of Al-Hasakah and Qamishli, but will instead remain on the outskirts, provided the agreement is fully implemented.

The statement further indicated that the timeline and specific details regarding the peaceful integration of Al-Hasakah Governorate, including Qamishli, will be discussed at a later date. The agreement, marking the third between the government and the SDF, stipulates that SDF commander Mazloum Abdi will nominate candidates for the positions of Assistant Minister of Defense and Governor of Al-Hasakah. He will also propose names for representation in the People’s Council and a list of individuals for employment within Syrian state institutions.

Crucially, the agreement specifies that no armed forces, aside from local security forces comprised of residents from the area, will be present in Kurdish villages. The accord also includes provisions for integrating SDF forces into the Ministries of Defense and Interior, with ongoing discussions regarding the integration mechanism.

The SDF has announced its complete adherence to the ceasefire agreement reached with the government in Damascus.

It remains to be seen how this agreement will unfold and the long-term implications for the region. The next few days will be critical in determining the future of Al-Hasakah and the relationship between the Syrian government and the SDF.
