Putin Proposes Using Frozen Russian Assets for Gaza Reconstruction

Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated a willingness to contribute $1 billion from frozen Russian assets to a peace council dedicated to the Gaza Strip. The funds, currently held in the United States and frozen due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, could be used to aid in the reconstruction of the region.

Putin emphasized that Russia views the proposed peace council as a crucial mechanism for achieving a comprehensive settlement in the Middle East. He suggested that a portion of the frozen assets could be allocated to rebuilding areas affected by conflict.

“The remaining funds from the frozen assets could also be used to rebuild territories damaged by fighting, after a peace agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine,” Putin stated.

This announcement follows recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that Putin had accepted an invitation to join the peace council. The formal announcement of the council is anticipated during Trump’s participation in the Davos forum.

Prior to accepting the invitation, Putin stated that he had instructed the Russian Foreign Ministry to thoroughly examine the invitation and consult with strategic partners. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the initiative has a positive impact on the long-term resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on relevant United Nations resolutions.

Putin also highlighted the need to consider the “inalienable needs and desires of the Palestinians,” affirming Moscow’s support for “all efforts aimed at promoting international stability.”

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed reservations about Ukraine’s participation in the peace council if Russia is also involved. While confirming that Ukraine has received an invitation, Zelenskyy stated, “It is very difficult for me to imagine how we can be with Russia in the same council of any kind.”

The proposal to utilize frozen assets for reconstruction comes as the international community continues to seek viable solutions to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations Security Council previously approved a resolution authorizing increased aid and support for the region.
