Algeria’s Constitutional Court Member Leila Aslaoui Welcomes Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders

Leila Aslaoui, a member of Algeria’s Constitutional Court, today received the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, on behalf of the court’s President Omar Belhadj. Algeria’s Human Rights Efforts.

The meeting, part of Lawlor’s working visit to the Constitutional Court, highlighted Algeria’s ongoing deep reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law and human rights protection in the country.

Aslaoui, during the meeting, emphasized the significance of the reforms, which aim to solidify the state of law and order and preserve human rights in Algeria. She particularly referred to the constitutional amendment of November 1, 2020, which underscores the Algerian people’s commitment to human rights as stated in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This amendment also highlights the various international conventions ratified by Algeria.

Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor commended Algeria’s efforts in safeguarding human rights, focusing on enhancing and universalizing the principle of freedom protection, as mandated by international agreements. She appreciated the progress Algeria has made in protecting human rights and ensuring the rights of those defending them.

Lawlor’s visit and discussions with Algerian officials underscore the country’s commitment to international human rights standards and its efforts to integrate these principles into national legislation and practice.
