President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has emphasized the significance of the 2020 constitutional amendment, particularly its establishment of a Constitutional Court in Algeria. This landmark achievement, according to the President, reflects a firm commitment to promoting constitutional justice and reinforcing the rule of law within the nation.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the President of the Constitutional Court, Laila Aslaoui, at the opening of the 19th session of the Executive Bureau of the Conference of African Constitutional Courts and Bodies, President Tebboune stated that the amendment has significantly contributed to strengthening judicial independence. He also noted it has solidified the principle of separation of powers and enhanced mechanisms for constitutional oversight. These advancements, the President asserted, have collectively strengthened the system for protecting citizens’ rights, freedoms, and constitutional guarantees.

President Tebboune also expressed his deep appreciation for the Constitutional Court’s ongoing efforts to promote constitutional awareness. He described this as a fundamental element in building a state governed by law and fostering a strong sense of citizenship, particularly through training, education, and engagement with institutions and society.

Furthermore, the President underlined the symbolic importance of Algeria hosting the Conference of African Constitutional Courts and Bodies. This choice, he stated, embodies the trust placed in Algeria and its commitment to supporting African constitutional judicial work. He added that Algeria’s support extends beyond mere symbolism, encompassing multifaceted assistance to ensure the smooth operation of the Conference’s mechanisms.

The establishment of the Constitutional Court and Algeria’s commitment to its success demonstrate a clear dedication to upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law. This commitment is crucial for the continued development and stability of the nation.
