Algiers, January 22, 2026 – The Ministry of Communication has issued a formal warning to the French-language daily newspaper, El Watan, following a notification received from the Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament).
According to a statement released by the Ministry, the warning stems from an article published in El Watan’s issue number 10731, dated January 22, 2026. The article, prominently featured on the front page and continued on page four, bore the headline: “Senators Say ‘No’ to New Traffic Code.”
The Ministry contends that this headline and the accompanying article presented a false and misleading account of the Council of the Nation’s position, contradicting the official statement released by the Council itself. The Ministry asserts that El Watan’s reporting constitutes a blatant violation of the Organic Law on Information, specifically referencing articles 3, 20, and 35 of the law dated August 27, 2023.
Citing articles 68 and 71 of Law No. 23-19, pertaining to written and electronic press, dated December 2, 2023, and acting upon the notification from the Council of the Nation, the Ministry of Communication has formally cautioned El Watan to immediately comply with legally mandated procedures. The Ministry also reserves the right to take further action should the newspaper fail to comply.
The Ministry expressed its strong disapproval of El Watan’s alleged violation of the law, breach of professional ethics, and deviation from journalistic standards. The Ministry emphasized the importance of accuracy, verification of information, and reliable sourcing to prevent the dissemination of false and misleading information that could harm public interest.
The statement concluded by affirming the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to freedom of the press and its confidence in the responsibility of journalists. However, the Ministry reiterated that it will not hesitate to take appropriate legal measures against those who engage in such violations. The Ministry urged all media organizations and professionals to uphold journalistic integrity, act responsibly, maintain the credibility of media discourse, and adhere to professional ethics, always prioritizing the public interest.
