Parliament Approves Amendment to Nationality Law

Algiers – The Council of the Nation (Parliament) today unanimously approved the amendment to the Nationality Law.

The law was ratified during a public session presided over by Council President Azzouz Nasseri, in the presence of the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Lotfi Boujemعة, and the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Najiba Djilali.

Following the vote, the Minister of Justice explained that the approved text aims to “address certain behaviors that target the stability of our country and preserve the sanctity of the Algerian nationality bond between citizens and their state.”

He further stated that the importance of this amendment lies in its role as “a solution to confront the actions of some Algerians who have renounced their Algerian identity, abandoned their legal and moral obligations towards their homeland, and sought to undermine it. They have exploited their presence outside the national territory and the protection afforded to them by their host countries, some of which are known for their open hostility towards our nation, through the creation of a new system for the revocation of original or acquired Algerian nationality.”

The Minister emphasized that such revocation would be carried out “according to strict legal procedures and precise guarantees.” These include “specifically defining the cases of revocation, notifying the concerned party, receiving clarifications regarding the attributed actions, and studying the revocation files. Decisions will be made by a qualified special committee comprising specialists from various sectors and relevant bodies, ensuring that this procedure is free from any arbitrariness and governed exclusively by the logic of the rule of law and the protection of the state and its fundamental elements.”

The Minister expressed his conviction that such legislation “will enable Algeria to thwart all conspiracies and foil hostile plots against it.”

This amendment represents a significant step in safeguarding national interests and reinforcing the bond between citizens and the state.
