Spain Urges EU to Form Joint Army as Deterrent Measure

Spain has called on European Union member states to move towards the formation of a joint military force, deeming it a necessary measure to bolster deterrence. The call comes amid growing concerns about regional security and the need for a stronger, more unified European defense posture.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that Spain is urging the EU to proceed with the creation of a unified European army as a means of deterrence. He emphasized the importance of consolidating existing capabilities by effectively integrating European defense industries before forging a coalition of willing nations.

Albares acknowledged the legitimate debate surrounding the readiness of European citizens for military unification. However, he asserted that a collective effort would be far more efficient than maintaining 27 separate national armies. “Any joint effort will be more efficient than having 27 separate national armies,” he stated.

Speaking after a meeting with his Indian counterpart in New Delhi, Albares clarified that the objective of creating this army is not to replace the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He emphasized that the goal is to complement and strengthen European security capabilities within the existing framework.

“We need to demonstrate that Europe is not a place that allows itself to be subject to blackmail, whether military or economic,” Albares added, highlighting the strategic importance of a unified European defense force in the current geopolitical landscape. The proposal is expected to spark further debate and discussion among EU member states as they consider the future of European security and defense cooperation.

The move signifies Spain’s commitment to a stronger, more unified Europe capable of projecting power and influence on the global stage.
