Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria – The National Gendarmerie in Sidi Bel Abbes has successfully dismantled a criminal network specializing in livestock theft, authorities announced today.
The operation, conducted by the Benachiba territorial brigade under the regional Gendarmerie group, resulted in the arrest of twelve individuals aged between 25 and 40. The suspects are accused of forming a criminal association with the intent to commit livestock theft.
According to a statement released by the Gendarmerie, the investigation was launched following a complaint filed by a local farmer. The victim reported the theft of 37 head of cattle, all of local breed, from a stable adjacent to his residence in the municipality of Benachiba Chelia.
In response to the report, law enforcement implemented a comprehensive plan to combat livestock theft and devised a security strategy to apprehend the perpetrators. This involved securing all potential exit routes and transit corridors likely to be used for transporting the stolen livestock, while adhering to all legal procedures.
The operation culminated in the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the entire stolen herd. Authorities also seized mobile phones, metal cutting tools, and two vehicles allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
A legal case has been prepared against the suspects, and they have been presented before the Public Prosecutor at the Telagh Court for further proceedings. The Gendarmerie’s swift action underscores its commitment to protecting rural communities and combating livestock theft in the region.
