Algeria Gears Up for New Era in Bluefin Tuna Fishing

Algeria is preparing for a new phase in bluefin tuna fishing following nearly a decade and a half of restrictions. This development comes two months after Algeria successfully reclaimed its tuna quota, following the Seville meeting held between November 17th and 24th, 2025.

Algerian negotiators secured a quota of 2460 tons, benefiting from an increase of 437 tons. This raises Algeria’s share to approximately 5.10 percent of the total quota allocated to member states of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

This signals a significant upturn in bluefin tuna fishing prospects for 2028, restoring Algeria’s historical rights. The move aims to rectify the consequences of the 2010 reduction, which saw Algeria’s tuna fishing quota slashed to just 1%. This recovery is expected to compensate Algeria for the losses incurred over the past sixteen years.

Recently, Amar Oucheli, Algeria’s representative, was re-elected as chairman of the Sub-Committee 4 for a new term, highlighting the renewed confidence in his leadership. It is understood that Algerian diplomacy played a crucial role in supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries to achieve this important accomplishment.

This achievement is poised to strengthen national food security and increase Algeria’s revenue from bluefin tuna exports. Bluefin tuna is one of the most sought-after seafood products globally. The increased quota will allow Algerian fishermen to capitalize on this high demand and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The enhanced fishing capacity will require investment in infrastructure and training to ensure sustainable fishing practices are implemented. Further collaboration with ICCAT and other international bodies will be essential to maintaining healthy tuna stocks and promoting responsible fisheries management. Algeria is committed to playing a leading role in these efforts.
