Russia, Ukraine Exchange Heavy Attacks Amid Peace Talks

Moscow and Kyiv have both reported significant military attacks on their respective territories, even as discussions aimed at ending the ongoing conflict continue. These developments raise concerns about the fragility of the current diplomatic efforts.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, stated that Ukrainian forces launched a substantial assault on the region’s main city. He reported damage to critical energy infrastructure as a result of the attack.

In a Telegram post, Gladkov described the event as “the heaviest shelling of Belgorod” and noted that energy facilities were hit. “One of the buildings is on fire, and a crew from the Ministry of Emergency Situations is dealing with the blaze,” he stated. He added that debris from a downed drone caused a fire in a residential yard, and another downed drone damaged homes in a nearby village.

On the other side, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine as the most intense in weeks.

“Russia launched a large-scale attack on our regions overnight, firing 370 combat drones and 21 missiles of various types,” Zelenskyy said via Telegram. Ukrainian authorities reported casualties, including fatalities and injuries, in attacks targeting Kyiv and the Kharkiv and Dnipro regions. Kharkiv suffered the most significant damage, with energy infrastructure being specifically targeted.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the focus of Russian attacks on the energy sector highlights the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities by accelerating the acquisition of air defense systems.

These military actions coincide with ongoing talks facilitated in the United Arab Emirates. An American official described the talks as productive and suggested a potential meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy given the progress made. The official also indicated that a new round of discussions involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia is scheduled to begin soon, calling it a positive sign. However, significant obstacles remain, with territorial issues remaining a contentious point.
