Medgaz Reinforces Algeria’s Lead in Spanish Gas Market for 2025

Algiers – Algeria is poised to solidify its position as the primary supplier of natural gas to the Spanish market in 2025, according to data and reports analyzed by DZWatch. This development underscores the enduring energy partnership between the two nations amidst a complex European landscape.

Data indicates a substantial Algerian contribution to Spain’s gas imports. By the end of December 2025, Algeria exported a total of 128.504 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of natural gas to Spain. This volume represents between 34.5% and 38.5% of Spain’s total gas imports, depending on the calculation method. This performance allows Algeria to maintain its leadership position for the third year in a row, with the exception of 2022, which experienced an exceptional circumstance due to the repercussions of the energy crisis related to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Medgaz pipeline continues to be the backbone of Algerian supplies. In 2025 alone, the Medgaz pipeline delivered approximately 107.179 GWh, accounting for more than four-fifths of the total exported volume. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments contributed around 21.325 GWh, showing a slight decrease compared to 2024. However, this reduction did not impact Algeria’s overall market share or its ranking among suppliers. This balanced approach gives Algeria a clear advantage in a market that values stability and continuity over temporary solutions.

While Spain has seen a notable increase in imports of American LNG, rising by 98% compared to 2024 to reach 111.660 GWh (approximately 30% of total imports), this surge hasn’t dislodged Algeria from its leading position. This increase occurred in a particular political and economic context. Even with this growth, Algeria remains a key player in ensuring Spain’s energy security.

The strength of the Medgaz pipeline and Algeria’s consistent supply contribute to a reliable energy partnership that benefits both nations. DZWatch will continue to monitor developments in the energy sector and their impact on Algeria’s economic landscape.
