Algeria and Niger Strengthen Energy Ties, Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project

Niamey – Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, was received by the President of the Republic of Niger, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, on Monday, January 26, 2026. The meeting took place during a working visit aimed at consolidating bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy and hydrocarbons.

The audience was attended by senior Nigerien officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Minister of Justice, and the Minister of Petroleum, as well as the CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Algerian Embassy in Niger, and executives from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines.

During the talks, Minister Arkab conveyed the greetings of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to his Nigerien counterpart, emphasizing Algeria’s commitment to strengthening the historical fraternal ties between the two countries and expanding the prospects for bilateral cooperation in a way that serves the common interests of both peoples.

President Tchiani, in turn, conveyed his greetings and appreciation to the President of Algeria, reiterating his country’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Algeria in various fields and supporting the African cooperation and South-South partnership, which enhances stability and development on the continent.

The Nigerien President praised Algeria’s leading experience in the oil and gas sectors, expressing his country’s desire to benefit from the Algerian experience, especially in research and exploration projects supervised by Sonatrach, primarily the project completed in the Kafra oil field. He also stressed the strategic importance of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, appreciating Algeria’s efforts to implement it, given its pivotal role in supporting the economic and social development of transit countries and strengthening regional energy security.

This meeting reflects the strength of Algerian-Nigerien relations, based on trust and solidarity. It reaffirms the common will of the two countries to elevate the energy partnership to strategic levels that serve stability and sustainable development in the region. The discussions highlighted the mutual benefits anticipated from the pipeline project, underscoring its potential to boost economic growth and regional integration.
